Losing a job can be frustrating. One of the things that you may be worried about is how you are going to keep a roof over your head. Fortunately, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Department has housing grants for people who have lost their jobs. In order to qualify for one of these programs, you will need to submit documentation that details your financial situation. Both single individuals and families can qualify for one of these grants.
Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program
The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program is one of the programs that is available for people who are either homeless or at risk for becoming homeless. Unemployed people do not have to meet any income requirements. You can receive assistance for utilities and housing for up to 18 months. If you have lost your home due to foreclosure or eviction, then you can also get assistance with moving costs.
In order to get this grant, you must have a lease in place. You must also have a documentation that proves you have experienced a financial crisis.
Section 8 Housing Voucher Program
The Section 8 Housing Voucher Program is designed to help low-income families pay a portion of their rent. There are no income requirements that have to be met before one can get assistance with this program. However, if you are unemployed, then you will have to pay at least $25 per month in rent. The remaining portion of your rent will be paid by the Housing and Urban Development Department.
You are free to live in any type of housing that you want. However, it is important to remember that not every landlord accepts a Section 8 voucher. You will have to undergo a background check before you can get accepted by this program. You must also be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States in order to qualify for this program.
HUD Public Housing Program
This program is similar to the Section 8 Housing Program. The Housing and Urban Development Department will pay a portion of your rent, but you are required to live in a specific housing unit. You will not be able to get your rent paid if you move out of a public housing project.
You are eligible for this program if you are unemployed or a low-income earner. However, if you get a job, then you are required to report this to the Housing and Urban Development Department. You are also required to report any changes in income that you have. As long as you are still classified as a low-income earner, you will be able to get your rent paid.
The income limit can vary depending on the city that you are living in. However, most cities will classify you as a low-income earner if you earn less than what the median income in the city is.
Home Affordable Unemployment Program
The Home Affordable Unemployment Program is a program that is a part of the Making Home Affordable Program. This is a program that provides financial incentives to lenders in order to help homeowners reduce their monthly mortgage payments. The person can get their mortgage payments reduced to less than 31 percent of their monthly income. Lenders also have the option of completely suspending payments for over 12 months in order to give the homeowner a chance to find a new job.
In order to qualify for this program, one must be receiving unemployment benefits. The mortgage must also have been taken out before January 1, 2009. The amount that one owes must be less than $729,000. People who have already modified their mortgage through the Home Affordable Modification Program are not eligible for this program.
There are over 100 lenders in this country that participate in this program. Homeowners can visit the Home Affordable Unemployment Program website in order to see whether their lender participates in this program. People who have a loan that is backed by Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae are not eligible for this program. Both Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have their own programs that are designed to help people who are unemployed and struggling to make mortgage payments.
